Macon Sees Rise in March Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Macon recorded an unemployment rate of 3.7 percent in March, up one-tenth of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 5 percent. Despite this, Macon saw a rise in the labor force and the number of employed in March.

“Across Georgia, we continue to see increases in the labor force, the number of employed, and the number of jobs,” said Commissioner Mark Butler. “With Georgia having the lowest unemployment rate of the top ten most populated states, we are pleased to see Georgians enter the workforce filling the many open positions available in all of our regions and counties.”

The labor force increased in Macon by 162 and ended the month with 104,435. That number is up 1,089 when compared to March of 2021.

Macon finished the month with 100,586 employed residents. That number increased by 101 over the month and is up by 2,401 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Macon ended March with 103,100 jobs. That number is up by 400 from February to March and increased by 4,100 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims went down by 7 percent in Macon in March. When compared to last March, claims were down by about 86 percent.
